Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ Co-Writer Branded Her a Liar Over Christmas Hit
If you haven’t heard Mariah Carey’s iconic Christmas song “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” then you must be living under a rock. But many people don’t know that there’s a feud that has been surrounding the bop for a while now. It involves the hit’s songwriter calling the singer a liar. Here’s what’s known about the situation.
Mariah Carey’s Christmas Hit
“All I Want for Christmas Is You” was released back in 1994, and Mariah Carey earns about $2 million a year just from this one song. Whether you see it as a Christmas staple or you’re tired of hearing it every year, you can’t deny the fact that this song has made history. Walter Afanasieff, who co-wrote the track with Mariah Carey, recently accused the singer of telling “tall tales” about its invention.
In 2017, Carey claimed that she had written the song on her Casio keyboard when she was a kid. She also mentioned it in her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey. However, it looks like Afanasieff has another version of how the song came to be. The co-writer claims that Carey has started making up a false story about the origin of the tune in the last 10 years.
How it Really Went Down
According to him, the song was created while he was playing the piano with Mariah singing along. Afanasieff credits himself for the music and says that Carey was the one who wrote the lyrics, stating that there is no way she had come up with the song at a younger age as she has never truly understood music because, in his words, she doesn’t play an instrument.
Mariah Carey has not made an official statement on the situation yet. As it stands, all fans can do is enjoy the song and wait for the singer to address the issue.
