Now Hannah was working hard to put herself through college because she wanted to be a therapist. She had a heart full of compassion and care for everyone around her, always looking out for other people. Little did Hannah know, these important traits of hers were going to play a major part in a future event that would totally transform her life.

Waitress at a Diner

Hannah had her job at the Duke Diner, situated on the edges of the town. It was an authentically traditional spot known for its heaping helpings of comfort food and drew in a constant flow of neighborhood folks and people who were just passing through alike, day after day.

She hadn’t been overly thrilled to work as a waitress, yet she found comfort in the welcoming, cozy ambiance and knew many of the regular customers very well. The small-town café was the last spot she would associate with danger or anything scary. But, little did she know, life was about to take an unexpected, dark twist.

Just a Regular Shift

One afternoon, Hannah clocked in for her usual shift after heading to her morning classes. The restaurant had a quiet feel, only having a handful of customers occupying the counter seats, as it was the calm period between the bustling lunch and dinner rushes. As she began her workday, Hannah found comfort in completing the ordinary tasks that greeted her. These tasks included things like topping up the condiments and refreshing the specials listed on the chalkboard.

The day was shaping up to be smooth and free of troubles. However, the calm was about to be shattered by the next set of customers walking through the door, turning it into anything but an easy day.

Family of Four

The door gave a small jingle as a father and his three darling daughters walked into the place. Together they all chose a booth to sit at. The daughters, who were all dressed alike in charming matching outfits, excitedly climbed into one side of the booth, sitting side by side in a cute single line. Their sweet presence warmed the atmosphere, making the whole scene feel utterly delightful and heartwarming.

The dad was attired in the usual dad uniform—an earth-toned polo shirt and khakis. Hannah momentarily pondered if there was a mother figure involved. When she was just a little girl, she had lost her own mother and she silently wished that these young girls didn’t share the same sorrowful fate. Little did Hannah know, these girls were tangled in a different kind of heartbreaking situation.
